Just a reminder …

The 2019 Alumni Picnic is NEXT SATURDAY!  (April 27)

This year we’re back at Ft. Lowell Park (Ramada 1) and as always, will bring the usual picnic supplies. We’ll have burgers and dogs, beer for the adults, and drinks for everyone (and if we run low, we’ll send out for MORE.)

Someone we know will be celebrating a milestone birthday soon, so there WILL be cake!

If you can bring a side dish, great! If you can’t, come anyway! (Sorry, we can’t provide for special diets.)

This is a family event so bring the kids!

(Tucson Parks and Rec has a no glass bottle policy so if you bring beverages, please stick to plastic or metal containers.)

Hope to see you there!

Fellow MOREons,

Once again I have sad news to share at the beginning of a new year.

Irma was contacted by Idy Linares’ granddaughter, to let her know that Idy passed away January 20, 2019 after a brief illness.

In her email to Irma, Idy’s granddaughter said:

“My Grandma took a lot of pride in being a teacher and she made sure to let most of her nurses know about her career with TUSD and the importance of proper grammar. One day we spend several hours talking and she recalled several hilarious stories from incidents that had happened in the classroom at Project More.”

Idy was our friend, our colleague, our teacher, and I’m sure she would be quite embarrassed by expressions of sentimentality, but I will say it was my pleasure to have known her and that I will miss her and think of her often.

Idy’s remains will be cremated and entombed in David, Panama. No services or obituary are planned.

Take care of yourselves, love each other, help each other, take care of each other.

Mother Nature was kind to us and held off the rains till late in the afternoon 🙂

Another year, another Alumni Picnic, another small turnout, but it was great to see old friends and make new ones too!

(Here’s a link to MORE picnic pictures.)

In the coming weeks we will be discussing when (or if) we will have another picnic. Keep checking back to join in the discussion.

25 August, 2018

A bit of a new look for the old website.  Anticipating increasing viewership as we lead up to the 2018 Alumni Picnic, we’re working to improve loading speed and visibility.  Unfortunately, this will mean occasional down time so keep checking back if you find the site is down.  (We’re working as fast as we can 🙂 )  BTW, you may need to refresh your browser to see the changes.

12 August, 2018

We’ve had a brief respite from the oppressive heat of late, which turns our thoughts to autumn, and those autumnal thoughts lead (naturally) to the 2018 Alumni Picnic!

This year we’re going to bring a mess of burgers, dogs, charcoal fixin’s and drinks, and if we run out, we’ll send out for MORE (get it?) All we want from you is your bodies. (Read into that what you wish :-)) So what’s the catch you ask? Well, we will put out the infamous picnic “Tip Jar” and it would nice if some could bring a side dish, and we can’t provide for special diets, and of course we will insist on your participation in the dreaded “group picture”, but what we really want is your bodies. (Am I repeating myself? Can you tell I’m not an English teacher?) This is a family event so bring the kids!

(Tucson Parks and Rec has a no glass bottle policy so if you bring beverages, please stick to plastic or metal containers.)

The Specifics:

When: Sunday, October 21 2018

Where: La Madera Park  2700 E la Madera Dr, Tucson, Arizona 85716

Time: 11:00 – 4:00

Once again Liberti Moreno (Cabrona Pero Cariñoza) has come through for us, securing ramada reservations and the all-important beer permit!

The park has only one ramada so it will be easy to find us. There’s lots of shade, and the park has a nice playground, so bring the kids

WE NEED YOUR HELP NOTIFYING OUR FELLOW ALUMNI!

If you are in contact with any alumni (alumnus?) please ask if they are aware of the event and if not, extend a personal invitation. Also, please and ask them to “like” the Project MORE Alumni Facebook page so they get updates! If they aren’t on Facebook, event details can be found on the main page of projectmorealumni.com We’ll also post the event on classmates.com

Of course you’re tired of hearing this, but we’re still trying to track down items of memorabilia. If you have any of the following (and you would be willing to loan them to us), please bring them to the picnic or drop us a note so we can make arrangements to pick them up. We promise to take good care of them and will return them as soon as they are copied or scanned.

Wanted items include:

Graduation Programs
Any pre-1986
1991 and 2003

Graduation Videos
Any pre-1991
1994, 1998 and 2001

Photographs and any other memorabilia
Any you wish to share (be sure to clearly mark your name so they can be returned.)

SEE YOU ON OCTOBER 21st!

1 August, 2018

Fellow MOREons,

I had planned to spend some time today composing a happy post about the Autumn Alumni Picnic. That must wait however as I have some extremely sad news to pass on. Last night I received word that Del Evans (who damned near everyone knew only as Del) died last Saturday (July 28.) Del’s significant other, Claire Fellows, said that Del had been ill for some time and that he wanted me to let his friends know of his passing.

Del was our friend, our teacher, our brother.  I’m certain he would roll his eyes at my sentimentality but I will miss him dearly, as I know will many of you.

Take care of yourselves, love each other, help each other, take care of each other.

John “C.”

The results of the latest poll favored a Spring picnic but since only 10 people actually voted we are going to stick with the original plan for a Fall picnic.

Hey Fellow MOREons!

It’s just two months till the next Alumni Picnic! Yeaaaah! (Now read that again using Kermit the Frog’s voice )

Responses to our last Alumni Survey indicated that most preferred just one picnic a year in the Fall at either La Madera or Ft. Lowell parks, preferably on a Sunday so put a big schulenheiser* on your calendar an set aside Sunday, October 29, 2017 to join us at La Madera Park for a gathering of family and friends.

Sunday, Sunday, October 29
La Madera Park
2700 E La Madera Dr.
12:00pm – 4:00pm or thereabouts

Give a shout-out to Liberti Moreno (Cabrona Pero Cariñoza) for once again securing ramada reservations and the all-important beer permit!

There’s no charge to attend but (of course) we will put out the inevitable “tip jar.” (It’s ok to give till it hurts )

The park has only one ramada so it will be easy to find us. There’s lots of shade, a nice playground so bring the kids and since it’s only three days before Halloween it would be a great time to have them try out their costumes. We might even be able to round up some pumpkins and have a pumpkin decorating contest. (Any prizes you might be willing to donate for the contest would be greatly appreciated.)

The Ramada has a grill and we’ll bring charcoal and BBQ tools. (We may even spring for a few burgers and dogs.) Each time we’ve had a picnic we asked that you bring food for yourselves and a bit more to share and we’ve always had plenty to go around. (Tucson Parks and Rec has a no glass bottle policy so if you bring beverages, please stick to plastic or metal containers.)

WE NEED YOUR HELP NOTIFYING OUR FELLOW ALUMNI! If you are in contact with any alumni (alumnus?) please ask if they are aware of the event and if not, extend a personal invitation. Also, please and ask them to check out this page or “like” the Project MORE Alumni Facebook page so they get an invitation and updates! Event details can also be found on classmates.com under Project MORE High School/Reunions.

You’re probably tired of hearing this but we’re still trying to track down several items of memorabilia. If you have any of the following and you would be willing to loan them to us, please bring them to the picnic or drop us a note so we can make arrangements to pick them up. We promise to take good care of them and will return them as soon as they are copied or scanned. Wanted items include:

Thanks to all who participated in the 2017 Alumni Picnic Survey! We didn’t get a great response but we’ll use your input in planning future events.

Congratulations Eegee’s Coupon Card winners Ruth, Kathryn and Mike. Your goodies are in the mail.

Watch this space for announcements about coming events.

10 June, 2017

Hey fellow MOREons!

It’s time for the 2017 Alumni Picnic Survey!

We really want your input and this year, as a bit of enticement, your completed survey can enter you into a drawing for one of three Eegee’s Coupon Cards!  (Now go back and read that using Kermit the Frog’s voice and enthusiasm in your head  )

You can access the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RFNYBK8

If you know any fellow alumni who aren’t on Facebook or don’t frequent this site, please pass along the URL as we want everyone to have a chance to give their input.

Please complete the survey by the Summer Solstice (June 20.)

Thanks for your help!

2017 Spring Alumni Picnic Recap

In the future, this picnic will be referred to as the “2017 Retired Alt. Ed. Faculty Picnic*  (*attended by one student)

Not really sure what happened.  There were a few last-minute cancellations but we were expecting many, many more to attend.  It was suggested that we have these too frequently and that we should cut back to one per year or even biennially.   Several years we put out a survey and, while the response was lite, the majority preferred twice-a year picnics so we’re stumped to explain the lack of participation.  (On the up side, it was a great staff reunion )

We REALLY want your input on how often (or even if) we should hold these events so watch for a new survey in the next few weeks.  Until then, check out a few pictures at https://www.projectmorealumni.com/2017-spring-alumni-picnic-at-la-madera-park/

WE NEED YOUR HELP NOTIFYING OUR FELLOW ALUMNI! If you know of any alumni (alumnus?) that doesn’t frequent Facebook or projectmorealumni.com, please extend a personal invitation.

Happy Groundhog Day Fellow MOREons!

If a groundhog sees its shadow there’s six more weeks of winter, if not, spring is only a month and a half away (or something like that.)  In any case, before it gets too damned hot it’s time to announce the upcoming Spring Alumni Picnic!*

Put a big schulenheiser** on your calendar for Sunday April 30, 2017 and join us at La Madera Park for a gathering of family and friends.

Sunday, April 30
La Madera Park
2700 E La Madera Dr.
12:00 – 5:00 or thereabouts

This time we’re picnicking on a Sunday in hopes that we can see some new (old) faces.

La Madera is a popular park (we’ve had nothing but compliments) and it’s frequently booked up so once again put your hands together and thank Liberti Moreno for securing a reservation almost before the ants had carried off the debris from the last picnic.

Map

The park has only one ramada (so it will be easy to find us), lots of shade, a nice playground (so bring the kids), basketball and even horseshoes. This time we will remember to bring the horseshoes and maybe we can talk Franz into giving lessons 🙂

The Ramada has a grill and we’ll bring charcoal and BBQ tools. (We may even spring for a small keg and a few burgers and dogs.) Each time we’ve had a picnic we asked that you bring food for yourselves and a bit more to share and we’ve always had plenty to go around. (Tucson Parks and Rec has a no glass bottle policy so if you bring beverages, please stick to plastic or metal containers.)

12 September, 2016

Hey Fellow MOREons!

Just 10 days left until the (official) end of summer so you know what that means. Yeah, it will be hot for another month. WAIT … No! I mean it’s time to plan for our Autumn Alumni Picnic!* Put a big schulenheiser** on your calendar for Saturday October 22 and join us at Ft. Lowell Park for a gathering of family and friends.

Saturday, October 22
Ft. Lowell Park Ramada 1 (by the playground)
2998 N. Craycroft Rd.
Tucson, AZ 85712
11:30 – 4:00 or thereabouts

This time we’re back at Ft. Lowell Park, right next to the playground, so bring the kids! Ramada 1 has a grill and we’ll bring charcoal and spring for a small keg. Every time we’ve done this we’ve asked that you bring food for yourselves and a bit more to share and we always have plenty to go around. Put your hands together in appreciation of Liberti Moreno for securing the Ramada reservation and beer permit!

(TUCSON PARKS AND REC HAS A NO GLASS BOTTLE POLICY SO IF YOU BRING YOUR OWN BEVERAGES, PLEASE STICK TO PLASTIC OR METAL CONTAINERS.)

We want to reach as many alumni as possible so this announcement will appear on the  PM Alumni Facebook page but we no longer have a connection on classmates.com so if you have a paid classmates.com membership, please feel free to set up a “Reunion” for this event and if you know any alumni who shun social media (Luddites one and all) please pass the word and extend a personal invitation.

We’re still trying to track down several items of memorabilia for out collection. If you have any of the following you would be willing to loan us, please bring them to the picnic. We promise to take good care of them and will return them as soon as they are copied or scanned. Wanted items include:

Hey, you’re not getting any younger so drop on by to see how we’ve all aged, reconnect with old friends and make some ones too! Besides, if you don’t show up, how do you expect to be included in one of these wonderful group pictures we keep posting 🙂

See you on October 22nd!

27 April, 2016

Unexpected errors with the Google Custom Search have been encountered so we have reverted to the traditional search function until those errors are understood and corrected.  Sorry about that 🙁

25 April, 2016

The survey is now closed and we will be posting the results shortly.  To all who participated, thank you!

You may have noticed a new search box, powered by Google, at the top of the page.  We hope this will make it easier to find memorabilia that might otherwise remain hidden from view.  Please drop us a line if you encounter any problems with this new search tool.

16 April, 2016

If you have completed the survey (see April 11 post below), thank you.  If you have not, you have one more week before the survey closes and we begin examining and analyzing your input.  Remember, “Decisions are made by those who show up!”  (A good motto in an election year 🙂 )  Click the link to start the survey.

Spring Alumni Picnic Recap

The turnout was smaller than expected (at times the number of former staff exceeded former students) but we heard no complaints and a good time seemed to have been had by all. In fact, plans are already underway for a Fall picnic 🙂

A special shout out to Cabrona Pero Cariñoza (AKA Liberti Moreno) for securing the reservations and beer permit and to Tom Anderson for providing the beer! And a special thank you to all who donated to the picnic fund. A couple of those donations were quite generous and helped us cover the cost of reserving the ramada.

The new photo album has been posted.  Check it out at 2016 Spring Alumni Picnic Gallery or find it on Facebook at Spring Alumni Picnic Facebook Album

In the next few days we’ll be posting a link to a very short survey asking for your advice/opinion about the day/date/location of the Fall picnic so keep checking back.

See you in the Fall!

John “C”

Side Note: while examining the name tags, trying to tag the photos, I realized that even though the turnout was small, FOUR DECADES of former students and staff were represented. Not too shabby!

4 February, 2016

The move was successful! (If you wonder why we keep posting about this, well, it’s because it’s a really big deal … at least from this side of the monitor.)  We’re still in the process of uploading files and found a few are still missing and a few may be lost for good.  (We lost the entire “Archives” section and the Park Avenue Journal articles are missing to name a few.)

While uploading files to the new site, we’re trying to faithfully recreate the old.  Naturally there will be some “slippage” so if you notice anything missing or anything out of place, please click on the “Contact” link in the left column and let us know.

3 February, 2016

The move is on!  New hosting has been purchased and files are being transferred.  (We hoped to migrate the old site to the new host but a crash resulted in the need to upload files manually.)  The domain name should transfer to the new host within the next 24 hours during which time the site may be unavailable.  (Sorry, we can’t be more specific about the time but that’s controlled by the new hosting company.)

While uploading files to the new site, we’re trying to faithfully recreate the old.  Naturally there will be some “slippage” so if you notice anything missing or anything out of place, please click on the “Contact” link in the left column and let us know.

The status of the TUSD Alternative ED Alumni site is undetermined at this time.  We had hoped to fold the TAEA site into the Project MORE Alumni site but the number of files involved, specifically graphic files, would make a combined site too unwieldy.  Since we’re saving a bit of money by moving the Project MORE Alumni site we may be able to buy new hosting for the TAEA site.  Watch this space for further announcements 🙂

12 February, 2016

PROJECTMOREALUMNI.COM

The move is complete!  Hopefully you will find all the pictures and graphics formally available at the old host in the (relatively) same place on the new and that page loading and file transfers will be speedier.  The domain name remains the same (projectmorealumni.com) so there is no need to update your bookmarks.  We’re still making minor tweaks to the site so keep checking back and please drop us a note if you find anything missing or links that do not work.

ALTERNATIVEEDALUMNI.COM

This move is also complete.  If you had the site bookmarked you will now be taken to the projectmorealumni.com page.  To go to the TUSD Alternative ED Alumni page click on the “All Alternative Schools” tab in the top menu or if you find that annoying, update your old bookmark to http://altedalumni.projectmorealumni.com/ and you will be taken directly to the correct page.  As mentioned in previous posts, this was done because the TUSD Alternative Ed website had few visitors and quite a bit of money has been saved by making it a sub-site of the Project MORE site.

20 March, 2016

Hey Fellow MOREons!

Just TWO WEEKS ‘till the next Alumni Picnic!  (Sunday, April 3 at La Madera Park.)  If somehow this has escaped your attention, scroll down to the 3 March post below or check out the details at  https://www.facebook.com/events/1673064942950396/

We need your help contacting fellow alumni.  The last time we searched Facebook, 579 people had indicated an association with Project MORE (graduated, attended, liked, etc.)  Unfortunately Facebook  only allows us to invite people who are in our Friend’s List so please take a moment, scan the list at People associated with Project MORE on Facebook and pass along an invitation to anyone with whom you may be in contact. (Ok, we know it’s going to take more than a moment to scan 579 names but you catch out drift.) (For those who feel Facebook is evil, please note that the link is to a page on this website, not Facebook 🙂 )

See you on the 3rd!

3 March, 2016

So far, all the posts this year have been about “The Move” (check out the Archives page for details.)  Getting tired of that?  (Aren’t we all!)  Time for something new…

REMINDER!  We’re just a month away from the next ALUMNI PICNIC!

Put a big schulenheiser** on your calendar anticipating an afternoon of camaraderie and bonhomie!

Sunday, April 3
La Madera Park
2700 E La Madera Dr
11:30 – 4:00 or thereabouts

Once again the picnic will be on a Sunday in hopes that we can see some new (old) faces.

We had nothing but compliments (that’s compliments, not complaints) about La Madera Park so we’re going back! A tip of the New Year’s Top Hat to Liberti Moreno for securing the park reservation and beer permit!

The park has only one ramada (so it will be easy to find us), lots of shade, a brand new playground (so bring the kids), basketball and even horseshoes. (This time we will remember to bring the shoes 🙂 )

The Ramada has a grill and we’ll bring charcoal and BBQ tools. (Tom Anderson has once again volunteered to spring for small keg !) cEach time we’ve had a picnic we asked that you bring food for yourselves and a bit more to share and we’ve always had plenty to go around. (Tucson Parks and Rec has a no glass bottle policy so if you bring beverages, please stick to plastic or metal containers.)

WE NEED YOUR HELP NOTIFYING OUR FELLOW ALUMNI! If you know of any alumni (alumnus?) that doesn’t frequent Facebook or projectmorealumni.com, please extend a personal invitation and ask them to “like” the Project MORE Alumni Facebook page so they get an invitation and updates! (We are assembling a list of former MOREons who have a presence on Facebook but have not “friended” Project MORE Alumni and hope to have that list posted shortly. If you are in contact with anyone on that list, please ask them to “Like” us so they can receive invitations and updates.)

We’re still trying to track down several items of memorabilia. If you have any of the following you would be willing to loan us, please bring them to the picnic. We promise to take good care of them and will return them as soon as they are copied or scanned. Wanted items include:

Graduation Programs
Any pre-1986
1991 and 2003

Graduation Videos
Any pre-1991
1994, 1998 and 2001

Photographs and any other memorabilia
Any you wish to share (be sure to clearly mark your name so they can be returned.)

2015 was kind of rough year having lost so many friends so why not take this opportunity to visit with current friends, reconnect with old friends and make some new friends!

See you April 3!

*Formally called the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. First Annual Alumni Picnic but we lost count 🙁

**schulenheiser: not sure if it’s a real word but it sounds better than “mark your calendar.” Besides, it’s fun to say “schulenheiser”
